Samuel E. Upchurch, Jr.
Chairman of the Board
Mr. Upchurch's experience in the financial sector includes an extensive background in corporate and financial law, and a long-term history with Regions Financial Corporation, during which he served as General Counsel, Regional Chief Executive Officer, Director of Corporate and Strategic Initiatives and Head of General Bank, Mr. Upchurch offers a broad and unique perspective to the leadership of Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Upchurch is a member of the Alabama State Bar, the President's Cabinet of the University of Alabama, the President's Leadership Council of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama's Farrah Law Society. Mr. Upchurch holds Directorships on boards for Security Engineers, Mountain Brook Country Club, the Nature Conservancy of Alabama, and of course, Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Upchurch has also been an integral member of the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, having served as Chairman, Executive Committee member and Campaign Chairman. He also served on the board of directors as program chairman for Birmingham's Downtown Rotary Club. Mr. Upchurch achieved his A.B. from Davidson College, his M.A.T. from Rollins College and his J.D. from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Cheryl Viar Upchurch, have 3 children and 9 grandchildren.
Scott B. Reed
Senior Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Reed is responsible for the overall growth, profitability, and strategic direction for Oakworth Capital Bank. He previously worked 16 years with Regions Financial Corporation. While at Regions, he served as Central Alabama Group President with responsibility for overall profitability of banking and ancillary operations of a $7 billion business unit. Mr. Reed also served as Chief Administrative Officer for Strategic Planning for Regions Financial Corporation, Retail Executive for Central Alabama, and Head of Business Banking for Birmingham, Alabama. He is founder and president of the Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation and is a member of the Southern U.S. Region of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO). He received his undergraduate degree in Finance from Auburn University and earned a Master of Arts in Public and Private Management from Birmingham Southern College. He is also a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, with Honors.
Ronald C. Jackson
Managing Director, Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Jackson is the chief financial officer and a member of the board of directors of Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Jackson has 30 plus years experience in the financial services industry, having served as corporate controller, chief accounting officer and director of investor relations for Regions Financial Corporation. While in the financial services industry, Mr. Jackson obtained expertise in accounting and auditing, financial reporting, budgeting and planning, risk management, and merger and acquisition analysis and integration. He graduated from Auburn University and is a certified public accountant.
Sam A. Scalici, Jr.
Managing Director, Head of Banking
Mr. Scalici oversees all banking services and is a member of the board of directors for Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Scalici's experience includes 16 years with Regions Financial Corporation. During that time, he had responsibilities as a commercial banker, bank president, Director of Business Banking for the Central region and Head of Business Banking for the 16 state footprint. Mr. Scalici graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Finance. He earned his Masters in Public and Private Management from Birmingham Southern College as well as his graduate degree in banking from Louisiana State University Banking School.
Forest W. Whatley, Jr.
Managing Director, Head of Risk and Credit
Mr. Whatley is responsible for risk management and is the chief credit officer for Oakworth Capital Bank. He is also a member of the board of directors. Prior to joining Oakworth Mr. Whatley's experience in the financial services industry includes 11 years at First Commercial Bank, an affiliate bank of Synovus Financial Corp.. During that time, he had responsibilities as a senior group executive for risk management, chief credit officer, senior group executive for retail banking, commercial relationship manager, and private banking relationship manager. Mr. Whatley worked with Bank of America (formerly Citizens and Southern National Bank) for 7 years prior to First Commercial Bank. Positions held were a commercial lender, commercial credit underwriter, director of the management training program for the State of Georgia, commercial credit management associate, retail management associate, and branch manager. Mr. Whatley graduated from Auburn University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major concentration in finance. He is involved in the community as a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club (formerly board member), Board of Directors for McWane Science Center, Monday Morning Quarter back Club, and Leadership Birmingham Class of 2005.
Luther J. Strange, III
Mr. Strange is the Attorney General of Alabama. He is a graduate of Tulane University and Tulane Law School. Mr. Strange serves on the Board of Advisors for the United States Merchant Marine Academy and is an Eagle Scout and a Rotarian. Prior to being elected Attorney General, Mr. Strange was recognized as one of Alabama's leading economic development lawyers and frequently advised companies on growth and expansion opportunities in the state.
Robert (Randy) A. Reed
Mr. Reed is founder and President of ABC Polymer Industries, a diversified plastics manufacturing company located in Helena, Alabama. Prior to forming his own company, Mr. Reed served in executive positions with National Bank of Commerce and AmSouth Bank. He serves on the Board of Directors for MainGate MLP Fund and is a founding board member of the Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation. Mr. Reed's professional affiliations include The Downtown Rotary Club; Monday Morning Quarterback Club; and he is also a member of the Southern U.S. Region of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and the Society of International Business Fellows. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Finance from Auburn University in 1989 and also earned his Master of Arts in Public and Private Management from Birmingham Southern College in 1993.
Richard (Rick) D. Horsley
Mr. Horsley was the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Financial Officer of Regions Bank and Regions Financial Corporation prior to his retirement in December 2006. At Regions he served as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer from 2002 until mid-2005 with responsibilities for all of the revenue generating operations at Regions including Regions Bank and Morgan Keegan. Mr. Horsley began his career in 1972 as Comptroller for Regions Bank. He has been involved in various banking organizations, including teaching at Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He serves on the Board of Trustees for Samford University; the Board of Visitors at the University of Alabama; and is a Board member of the Nature Conservancy. Mr. Horsley received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from the University of Alabama in 1964.
E. Lyle Cain, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Cain is a surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. He is the Team Orthopedist for the University of Alabama and Medical Director for the University of West Alabama. Dr. Cain also works as the team orthopedist for the Birmingham Barons (Chicago White Sox AA) Minor League baseball team and several local high schools. He has also been published in several medical journals and textbooks and speaks widely on the subject of Sports Medicine. Dr. Cain holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alabama where he also completed Medical School. He completed his education with a Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham.
Matthew G. Mead
Mr. Mead co-founded and is a Principal at Chickasaw Capital Management, LLC, an investment manager serving institutions and high net worth individuals. He has diverse investment experience across public and private equity, fixed income, and derivative markets. Mr. Mead started his investment management career with Goldman Sachs & Co.'s Private Wealth Management group in Memphis, where he served for 9 years and was a Vice President. He received his B.S. from Birmingham-Southern College in 1990, double majoring in Economics and Finance. He received an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University in 1992.
Mr. Morton is President and CEO of Robins & Morton, a nationally recognized General Contracting firm. Robins & Morton operates from seven geographic offices and specializes in engineering and construction for various industries, including healthcare, power, industrial and commercial markets. He is a Board Member of the Baptist Health System Foundation, Birmingham Business Alliance, Business Council of Alabama, Golden Enterprises, Greater Alabama Council of Boy Scouts, and United Way of Central Alabama. Mr. Morton is a 1987 graduate of Auburn University where he earned a degree in Building Science.
John B. Norris, V
Managing Director, Head of Wealth Management
Mr. Norris oversees the wealth management and investment services for the company. He has over 19 years experience in the money-management industry. Prior to joining Oakworth, Mr. Norris was chief economist, chairman of the investment strategy committee, and a senior fund manager for Regions Financial Corporation's Morgan Asset Management (MAM) subsidiary. Prior to joining MAM, Mr. Norris served as chief investment officer for The Trust Company of Sterne, Agee & Leach, Inc. He started his professional career in 1991 with Mercantile-Safe Deposit & Trust Company in Baltimore, Maryland, as an institutional fixed income portfolio manager. Mr. Norris frequently appears in various national and local media as an expert on the economy and the markets, and is currently a guest columnist to the Montgomery Advertiser's Sunday business section. He was named to the Birmingham Business Journal's (BBJ) "Who's Who in Banking & Finance" for 2004, the BBJ's "Top 40 Under 40" for 2007, and served on the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce's Council of Economic Advisors for a number of years. Currently, he serves on the finance committee and as trustee for the IPC Foundation. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1990 from Wake Forest University and his Master of Business Administration in 1994 from the University of Baltimore.
David M. Driscoll
Managing Director, Head of Technology and Operations.
Mr. Driscoll oversees Technology and Operations for Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Driscoll has 18 years experience in Technology and Operations within various industries. During that time he had responsibilities as a Systems Specialist, Network Engineer, Technical Operations Manager, Assitant Director of Operations and Director of Information Technology. Mr. Driscoll served as the Product Development Manager for Online Banking and Bill Payment services at SouthTrust Bank, N.A, where he oversaw all efforts related to the online banking channel. Mr. Driscoll served as the business lead for the SouthTrust/Wachovia Online Merger Integration. After the merger, Mr. Driscoll served as a Senior Product Development Manager in eCommerce for Wachovia Bank. He received his B.A. in 1991 from Skidmore College.
James D. Williams
Managing Director, Commercial Banking
Mr. Williams is responsible for helping oversee Oakworth Capital's commercial banking, which includes our medical practice offering. Mr. Williams banking experience includes 10 years total with First Commercial Bank (an affiliate of Synovus Financial Corporation), and eight years with Regions Financial Corporation before joining Oakworth in November of 2007. Mr. Williams has served in capacities of both commercial and private banking; structuring transactions for many different types of clients in various industries ranging from local privately held companies to larger publicly held institutions. Mr. Williams graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Mr. Williams earned his Master of Business Administration also from the University of Alabama. Mr. Williams is a lifelong member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent where he has served in various leadership roles. He is an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, and has served in various other capacities for charitable organizations in the Birmingham area.
Michael D. Mims
Managing Director, Private Banking
Mr. Mims serves as a client advisor and manages the private banking services at Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Mims experience includes 16 years as the owner of a local hardware and building supply company prior to transitioning to the financial services industry. His financial experience includes seven years with SouthTrust Bank serving in various capacities within the finance, audit, and wealth management divisions and three years with First Commercial Bank as vice-president and team leader within the private client group. Mr. Mims has experience providing financial services to professional and corporate executives as well as small to mid tier commercial clients. Mr. Mims graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He earned his Master of Business Administration from Samford University, and holds the professional designation of Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
Managing Director, Wealth Management
Ms. Ball oversees personal trust and estate services for Oakworth Capital Bank. In this capacity, she is directly responsible for the day-to-day administration of various types of trusts, estates and investment agency accounts established by or for the benefit of high net worth individuals and their families, charitable entities, and corporations. Ms. Ball is experienced in trust and estate administration working previously at Compass Bank and Synovus Trust Company for a total of 14 years. Ms. Ball graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Ms. Ball also attended Southern Trust School. Ms. Ball is active in her community serving as Treasurer-Elect of the board of directors of Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation, serving on the board of directors of Estate Planning Council of Birmingham, and on an annual basis she serves on a United Way Visiting Allocation Team. She is a former member of the board of directors for Urban Ministry and Children’s Aid Society.
J. Trent Green
Managing Director, Treasury Management
Mr. Green's area of responsibility includes treasury management products, sales, and support. Mr. Green worked for both Regions Financial Corporation and Compass Bank before joining Oakworth Capital in October of 2007. His work experience includes retail banking, private banking and treasury management. He served as assistant vice president in treasury management for Regions Financial Corp., with a sales area that included central Alabama and out-of-market national corporate banking clients. He also served as vice president and relationship manager in private banking at both Regions Morgan Keegan and Compass Bank. Mr. Green has held the professional designation of Certified Treasury Manager (CTP) since 2001. Mr. Green majored in finance while at the University of Alabama. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Beta Delta Chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at the University of Alabama.
T. Lane Wooley
Managing Director, Commercial Banking
Mr. Wooley is responsible for developing and managing relationships with privately held commercial and industrial businesses. His prior positions include 12 years with First Commercial Bank, an affiliate of Synovus Financial Corp., where he served as commercial relationship manager and later group leader focused on the middle market. He was also with Wachovia Bank in Atlanta where his roles included credit officer and commercial relationship manager, and where he developed his skills in asset-based lending and his affinity for general aviation finance. Before banking, Mr. Wooley was a senior consultant with Accenture plc. Mr. Wooley graduated from The University of Alabama where he received his Bachelor of Science in Corporate Finance and minor in Economics. He also completed his Masters of Business Administration at Emory University. In the community, he chairs the Board of Directors of Urban Ministry, Inc. and serves in various leadership roles at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Reese J. Kincaid
Client Advisor, Commercial Banking
Mr. Kincaid works as a client advisor in commercial banking. He most recently was a relationship manager at BBVA Compass in the Birmingham corporate banking division. His work experience includes a variety of commercial banking and cash management services for privately held businesses up to $250mm in revenues. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in finance.
Jennifer C. Wilson
Client Advisor, Private Banking
Ms. Wilson serves as a Client Advisor in private banking at Oakworth Capital Bank. Her experience includes over 15 years as a retail and private banking officer, as well as a financial analyst for WorldCom’s national account sector. Most recently Ms. Wilson served 8 years as vice president and relationship manager for First Commercial Bank’s Private Client Group. She has experience providing financial services to professional and corporate executives, as well as to small to mid-sized medical and law practices. Ms. Wilson graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi where she received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in finance. She earned her Master of Business Administration from Millsaps College, which also carried a finance emphasis. In the community, she is an avid volunteer and Executive Board Member and Treasurer of Make-A-Wish Alabama, a member of the Junior League of Birmingham where she has served numerous roles, and is a member of leadership council for Community Bible Study’s women’s night studies.
Adam W. Kirklin

Mr. Kirklin is responsible for developing and managing wealth management relationships for Oakworth Capital Bank. Mr. Kirklin’s experience includes 5 years with Johnson+Sterling, Inc, where he most recently served as Director of Portfolio Management. Mr. Kirklin graduated from Wofford College with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and is currently working towards his MBA at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
R. Edward Elliott

Mr. Elliott works as a client advisor in commercial banking at Oakworth Capital Bank. He spent several years in the brokerage of land and timber sales prior to the financial services industry. His financial experience includes several roles at BBVA Compass, where most recently he was a relationship manager. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Economics. Mr. Elliott is a member of Cahaba Park Church, and has served in various roles for charitable organizations in the Birmingham community.
